First the Langar, Then the Guru

Guru Amar Das made a beautiful rule: anyone who wished to meet him must first sit down in the langar — the free community kitchen — and share a simple meal with everyone else, all seated together on the floor.

One day the great Emperor Akbar himself came to visit. Before he could meet the Guru, he too sat on the floor, in a line with farmers and labourers and the poor, and ate the same plain food from the same kind of plate.

In the langar there was no high and no low, no rich and no poor — everyone was simply equal. The emperor was deeply impressed.

🌱 A thought to carry away

Before everything else, we are all equal — and sharing a meal reminds us of that.
