When Guru Nanak was a young boy, his father gave him some money and said, “Go to the market and make a good, profitable bargain.”
On the way, Nanak met a group of hungry holy men who had not eaten for days. He looked at the money in his hand, then at their tired faces, and decided what to do. He spent every coin buying them a good, warm meal and watched them eat with joy.
When he came home with empty pockets, his father was upset. But Nanak said gently, “Father, I have made the truest bargain of all — I fed the hungry.” The place where this happened is remembered to this day.
