When the great sacred pool was being dug and the shrine built, people came from everywhere to help with the work, simply out of love. This loving, shared labour is called ‘kar seva.’
Wealthy merchants, poor farmers, young and old, learned and simple — all worked side by side, carrying baskets of earth, with no one too grand to get their hands dirty.
As they worked together they sang and shared food, and what they built belonged to everyone equally. Together, in joy, they made something none could have made alone.
