The Shade That Did Not Move
When Nanak was a young boy, he took the village cattle to graze and, in the heat of noon, lay down to rest beneath a tree and fell fast asleep.
As the sun moved across the sky, the tree's shade moved with it — but the shade over the sleeping child stayed perfectly still, keeping him cool. Some say a cobra spread its hood to shade him.
The village landlord, Rai Bular, passed by and saw the wonder. From that day he knew this was no ordinary child, and he treated young Nanak with great respect.
