Makhan Shah was a trader whose ship was caught in a fierce storm. In his fear he prayed, promising gold coins to the true Guru if he was saved.
The storm calmed and he reached shore safely. But when he went searching, he found many people pretending to be the Guru, each hoping for his gold.
To each he quietly offered only two coins. At last he came to Guru Tegh Bahadur, who gently asked why he was holding back the rest he had promised. Overjoyed, Makhan Shah knew he had found the true Guru, who could see straight into his heart.
