In the langar, the free kitchen, there was always grain to be ground for the day's bread. It was hard, tiring work, turning the heavy stone mill round and round.
Guru Amar Das, even when he was very old and greatly honoured, loved to grind grain himself so that travellers and the poor could eat.
He taught that no work done in love is ever too small or too lowly. To serve others quietly is to serve God.
