The Tree That Shaded Everyone

By a dusty road grew a great spreading tree. It did not ask who came to rest beneath it — rich or poor, young or old, of any faith.

To every weary traveller it gave the same cool shade, the same shelter from sun and rain, freely and without question.

A passing teacher pointed to it and said: be like this tree. Give your kindness to all alike, and ask nothing in return.
