The longer Aarti gathers, beyond Guru Nanak's “Gagan mai thaal,” a fuller sequence of shabads by the Bhagats and the tenth Guru into the cosmic worship-service: the heavens as the platter, the luminaries as its lamps. It is sung especially on occasions such as the Aarti-Aarta in certain maryadas, where the whole of creation's worship is dwelt on at length.

When asked why some sing the Aarti briefly and others at length, a musician answered by playing a single note, then the same note woven into a long raag. “It is one light either way,” he said. “The longer song does not add a new sun or moon to the sky — it only lingers longer in wonder at the ones already there.”
