Composed by the third Guru, Anand Sahib begins “Anand bhaiaa meri maae” — I am in bliss, O my mother, for I have found my True Guru. Its forty pauris describe the settled, fearless happiness that arises when the mind turns from restless desire to the Name, and famously counsel “E man chanchla” — O fickle mind, this clinging to the world will not go with you. The first five pauris and the last are sung at the close of almost every Sikh ceremony.

The water-carrier's bliss
Before he was Guru, Amar Das rose every day before dawn — well into old age — to carry a pitcher of river water for his master Guru Angad's bath. Through years of cold mornings he never tired of the task; the joy was in the serving itself. From that long, humble devotion, tradition says, the Song of Bliss was born: bliss is not found, it is grown, one quiet act of love at a time.

But liberation is attained, when one is attached to the feet of the True Guru, chanting the Word of the Shabad.
