While the full Anand Sahib runs to forty pauris, the form recited at the close of almost every Sikh service is shorter: the opening five pauris (“Anand bhaiaa meri maae…”) together with the final fortieth (“Anand sunhu vadbhaageeho…”). It distils the whole Song of Bliss into a few minutes — the joy of finding the Guru and the call to listen to that bliss — and so is the version most Sikhs know by heart.

A child asked why, at the end of every gathering, they sang only a little of the long Song of Bliss and not the whole. The granthi smiled: “When you greet someone you love, you do not recite their every quality — a few words carry the whole heart. These six verses are like that: the whole bliss, folded small enough to carry home.”
