Following the turn of the Punjabi calendar, each month becomes a mood of the soul yearning for the Divine: the scorching heat of separation, the rains of grace, the chill of forgetfulness. Guru Arjan uses the year's weather as a mirror of the inner life, and teaches that the fortunate soul meets the Beloved not in some special season but whenever the heart truly turns. (Guru Nanak composed an earlier Barah Maha in Raag Tukhari.)

Every season is the season
A bride kept postponing her joy: not in the heat, she said, nor the rains, nor the cold — she would be happy only when the perfect month came. The seasons turned, and turned again, and the perfect month never arrived. At last an old woman told her: “The Beloved is not waiting for a month on the calendar. Turn to him now, and this ordinary day becomes the season you were waiting for.”
