Sung as the couple circles the Guru Granth Sahib four times, the four “laav” are at once a marriage song and a map of the soul's marriage to God: the first round sets duty and the Name as the foundation; the second is awe and love that burns away ego; the third is detachment and the company of the holy; the fourth is the serene bliss of union. Human love and divine love are blessed as one path.

Four times around the Light
Why, a child asked, do the couple walk around the holy book and not simply stand still and promise? Because, came the answer, a marriage is not one vow but a journey of four turns — first learning to live rightly, then to love past the ego, then to loosen one's grip on the world, and finally to rest in shared peace. Each round, the couple circles the Light that will guide all four.
