A small gathering of shabads — chiefly Guru Arjan's four in Raag Majh, “Mera man lochai gur darshan taae” (my mind longs for the blessed vision of the Guru) — expressing the pain of separation from the Guru and the thirst for reunion. So precious is the longing that a single such hymn is said to be worth a thousand.
A story to unlock it
The letters from Lahore
Sent away to Lahore on family duty, the young Arjan pined for his father, Guru Ram Das, and poured his heart into letters in verse. Two were intercepted by a jealous brother and never delivered. The third — “my mind longs for the sight of the Guru” — at last reached its destination. Reading it, the Guru wept and called his son home; the ache of separation had become some of the tenderest poetry in the Granth.

ਮੇਰੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਝ ਸਮੂਹ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਹਨ। ਮੇਰੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਤੇ ਪਨਾਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਹਨ।

All teachings, instructions and understandings are Yours; the mansions and sanctuaries are Yours as well.
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ. ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ; ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਨਿਤ ਤੇਰੇ ॥੩॥

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਿਫਤਾਂ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

Without You, I know no other, O my Lord and Master; I continually sing Your Glorious Praises. ||3||
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੀ; ਸਰਬ ਚਿੰਤ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਾਸੇ ॥

ਇਨਸਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਧਾਰੀ ਸਮੂਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਲੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਫਿਕਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

All beings and creatures seek the Protection of Your Sanctuary; all thought of their care rests with You.
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ; ਇਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸੇ ॥੪॥੨॥

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਉਹ ਹੀ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ। ਕੇਵਲ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਹੈ।
