Arjuna and the Bird's Eye

The teacher Drona set up a wooden bird on a branch and asked his students, one by one, to aim at its eye. Before each shot he asked, “What do you see?”

One said, “I see the tree, the branch, the bird, the sky.” Drona told him to step back. Others answered the same way. Then came Arjuna.

“What do you see?” asked Drona. “Only the eye of the bird,” said Arjuna. “Nothing else.” “Then shoot,” said Drona — and Arjuna's arrow flew straight and true.
