A mighty, boastful demon had grown so strong that no one could stand against him, and he troubled everyone far and wide. So the gods together called forth the goddess Durga, radiant and brave, riding a lion.
The demon changed shape again and again to trick her — now a buffalo, now this, now that — but calm and steady, Durga was never fooled and never afraid.
At last the long struggle ended and peace returned. People remember her each autumn, celebrating that courage and goodness can overcome even the strongest bully.
