God at the Grindstone

Janabai was a humble servant who spent her days grinding grain, sweeping, and fetching water — and all the while she sang songs of love to God in her heart.

She felt so close to the divine that, in her songs, she described God sitting right beside her, turning the heavy grindstone with her and helping with her endless chores.

To Janabai, no task was too small or lowly to be done with love, and no work could keep her heart away from God.
