Nandi the Patient Bull

Nandi was Shiva's gentle white bull and his most devoted friend. Wherever Shiva was, Nandi wished only to be near, gazing at him with love.

So Nandi took his place at the doorway and sat, patient and still, watching over his beloved lord without ever growing restless or bored.

That is why, in Shiva's temples, you will see Nandi seated calmly at the entrance to this day — the very picture of patient, faithful love.
