The Night of a Thousand Lamps

After fourteen long years in the forest, and after rescuing Sita, Prince Rama was finally coming home to the city of Ayodhya.

The people were overjoyed. They cleaned their homes, drew bright patterns on their doorsteps, and placed rows and rows of little oil lamps along every street and rooftop.

As Rama returned, the whole city sparkled like the night sky brought down to earth. People still light those lamps every Diwali, remembering how light welcomed goodness home.
