The Ganga in the Bowl

Ravidas was a cobbler who mended shoes and loved God deeply. A neighbour, off to bathe in the holy river Ganga, asked if Ravidas would come. “I would,” he said, “but I promised to finish these shoes today, and a promise is sacred too.”

He gave the neighbour a single coin to offer the river on his behalf, saying simply, “Give it if the Ganga reaches out her hand.” At the river, a shining hand is said to have risen to accept the humble coin.

Ravidas taught that if the heart is pure, holiness is found right where you are — even in a little bowl of water by your workbench.
