A parrot lived in a fig tree that gave him fruit and shelter. In time the tree grew old, withered, and bore no more fruit — yet the loyal parrot would not leave it for greener trees.
The king of the gods, curious, came down disguised and asked, “Why stay on a dead tree when fine ones stand all around?” “Because,” said the parrot, “it fed and sheltered me all my life. I will not abandon it now.”
Moved by such gratitude, the god offered the parrot a wish — and the parrot asked only that his old tree might bloom again. At once it burst into green leaves and sweet fruit.
