Tired and thirsty in the forest, the five Pandava brothers came upon a clear lake. One by one, four brothers drank without answering the voice that warned them first — and each fell into a deep sleep.
The eldest, Yudhishthira, heard the voice — a yaksha, a forest spirit — say, “Answer my questions first.” Calmly and truthfully, he answered every riddle: What is faster than the wind? The mind. What is the greatest wonder? That we see others die, yet act as if we never will.
Pleased with his honesty and patience, the yaksha woke all his brothers. Yudhishthira's calm wisdom had saved them all.
